Hello,

Welcome to Certain Seasons Mental Health Therapy. I'm so glad you've landed here!

My name is Lauren, and I'm a North Carolina Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT, License #2414). Have you struggled to build a relationship with therapists in the past, feel like people don't understand you, or aren't sure about therapy? Maybe you've hated therapy in the past, are scared to try again, or have been labeled a "difficult" or "resistant" client. If so, we might be a great fit. My approach to mental health treatment focuses on two major tenets: a positive, safe therapeutic relationship is a must, and you know yourself better than anyone else ever will. With these two beliefs in mind, I try to embark on every new therapy journey with authenticity, curiosity, and unconditional positive regard. After all, if you're looking to navigate certain seasons of your life more confidently, shouldn't that begin in the therapy space, with your therapist? I tailor my approach based on the feedback I gather from clients regularly to make sure the therapeutic journey is safe, beneficial, and supportive for you. Even though I'm an LMFT, I work with all types of clients: individuals, couples, and families. If you're wondering if we'll be a good fit, go ahead and reach out! Let's schedule 15 minutes to chat about it for free.

My Story

I never planned to become a therapist. In fact, I had a pretty negative outlook on therapy and what it could provide to me, until I met a really wonderful therapist as a teenager. Through that relationship, I learned a lot about therapy, and even more about myself and my natural gifts that weren't being used to their full potential. Still, I never thought about becoming a therapist until after college, when I graduated with a degree in International Affairs. I began to think about what I loved most in life, and I realized it was forming relationships with people and being an advocate. On a whim, I applied to a therapy program, went to an open house, and was floored by what I saw. Rooms of people just like me, wanting to advocate for others, and looking for a way to do it. Classes, internships, and years of practice later, I can confidently say that I'll never regret that split-second decision to look up a therapy program and "just check it out." I haven't lost my advocating spirit or my passion for people. I've gained a sense of humility about the therapy process: we are honored guests in someone else's life and aren't entitled to any part of our clients' stories. It is a true gift when a person decides to be brave enough to share any part of themselves with a therapist.

In session, I utilize Internal Family Systems theory (I've attended a Level 1 training) and person-centered techniques (thanks Carl Rogers!). I'm always open to and looking for feedback from clients, and will be more than happy to help someone find their best fit, even if it's not with me. I like to think I specialize in building relationships, helping clients recover from harmful therapy experiences (or other relationships with power imbalances), and helping clients discover their own best solutions. I have a history in working in community mental health, residential treatment for teens (which comes with its own very sensitive recovery process that I can help you with), and equine-assisted outpatient therapy with teens and adults.

I can't wait to meet you,

Lauren
